Traditional Slovenian textiles

If we take a look way back there are two distinct garments that were used in Slovenia. The first one is sheep skin where they would make a kind of coat out of it and it would serve as a really warm winter jacket. The second one, which is probably more specific for this region is the coat made from natural unprocessed materials, the most popular at the time was corn leaves. These would be picked from ripe corn and sewn together to make a protective garment for the shepherd.

Before cotton was introduced, most clothes in Slovenia were made from flax and wool but animal skin (leather) was also popular for winter clothes and shoes. In the 19th century between the 1st and 2nd world war was the time in which the textile industry in Slovenia began to develop. Apart from wool and flax, the materials used now included cotton, hemp and silk. At its prime the Slovenian textile industry included 67 textile factories all over the country. Fun fact: the city Maribor was at the time called Yugoslavian Manchester.
