Czech sheep

In 2011 there were 209 052 sheep in the Czech republic. There are two main types of sheep both coming from the same historical breed (ovce domácí).

Ovce Šumavská (Šumavka)

Ovce Šumavská is czech national breed.The main area of breeding is Šumava. In a small amounts, it‘s bread in Bavaria as well. The breed comes from historical rural sheep. Later breed was regenerated with breeds as cheviot, texel, eastfreasean sheep, and sovetian cigája. Šumavská ovce was officialy recognized in 1986.

The sheep has a medium body scope, harmonical physique, and a little blunted nose. Rams are normally horned, females without. Their skin is white. The fleece is white, semiclosed. wools are mixed, white color, semi-fine to semi-rough. Class C/D.

Šumavská ovce is combined breed with triple utitlity
- the length of the wool is 15-20 cm, yearly production for females is 3-3,5 kg, for males 4-5,5 kg
- average milk production is 100-120 kg of milk      
  per year
- at age of 100 days the lamb weighed 25-30 kg
  the daily weight increase takes 220-250 g 

In the year 2020 there were 1928 of ovce šumavská in 28 different farms in the Czech republic.

Ovce Valašská (Valaška)

The original valaška is a straight descendent of sheep, that came in the 14th century with settlers to the Beskydy Mountains from the Carpathians. They were good for the chalet and rough mountain way of life.

The sheep has a medium body scope, harmonical physique. Rams usually have little blunted noses. Both sexes are horned. Hornes are twisted, ‚lyra shaped‘ or straight.

The coloring is diverse. White, black, grey, or spotty. Very often there are black spots of different colors on limbs.

Šumavská ovce is combined breed with triple utitlity
- the length of the wool is over 20 cm, yearly production is 1,5-3 kg. Class F.
- average milk production is 100-120 kg of milk      
  per year
- at age of 100 days the lamb weighed 22-25 kg
  the daily wight increase takes 180-220 g 

In the year 2018, there were 987 of Ovce Valašská in 50 different farms in the Czech republic.
